Why Does My RCD Keep Tripping? Common Causes and What to Do
An RCD that keeps tripping is usually responding to electrical current flowing somewhere it should not.
The cause may be a faulty appliance, water entering electrical equipment, damaged wiring or the combined earth leakage produced by several items of electronic equipment. Occasionally, the RCD itself may be defective, but this should not be assumed until the installation has been properly tested.
Resetting the RCD may temporarily restore the electricity supply, but repeated tripping should not be ignored. The device may be disconnecting the power to protect occupants from an electric shock or another electrical hazard.

What Is an RCD?
RCD stands for Residual Current Device.
The device monitors the current flowing through the live and neutral conductors. Under normal conditions, the current flowing out through the live conductor should return through the neutral.
If the RCD detects an imbalance, it indicates that some current may be leaking to earth or taking an unintended route. The RCD disconnects the supply when the leakage reaches its operating threshold.
This can provide important additional protection against electric shock and certain electrical faults.

What Is the Difference Between an RCD, MCB and RCBO?
The switches inside a consumer unit do not all respond to the same type of problem.
RCD
An RCD primarily detects current leaking to earth. In an older split-load consumer unit, one RCD may protect several separate circuits.
A fault on one circuit can therefore disconnect every circuit supplied through that RCD.
MCB
An MCB, or Miniature Circuit Breaker, protects a circuit against excessive current caused by an overload or short circuit.
An MCB does not provide the same earth-leakage protection as an RCD.
RCBO
An RCBO combines overcurrent and residual-current protection in one device.
Each circuit can have its own RCBO, so a fault should normally disconnect only the affected circuit rather than several unrelated parts of the property.

Common Reasons an RCD Keeps Tripping
- A Faulty Appliance
A defective appliance is one of the most common causes of repeated RCD tripping.
Appliances that contain heating elements, pumps, motors or electronic controls can develop internal insulation faults that allow current to leak to earth.
Examples include:
- Washing machines.
- Tumble dryers.
- Dishwashers.
- Electric ovens.
- Electric hobs.
- Kettles.
- Toasters.
- Refrigerators and freezers.
- Immersion heaters.
- Electric showers.
- Portable heaters.
- Outdoor equipment.
- EV charging equipment.
The appliance may not trip the RCD immediately.
For example, an oven may operate normally until a particular heating element becomes hot. A washing machine may trip only during its heating or pumping cycle, while a refrigerator may cause an intermittent trip when its compressor or automatic defrost system operates.
If the RCD consistently trips when one particular appliance is used, stop using that appliance and arrange for it to be inspected.
- Water or Moisture Entering Electrical Equipment
Water ingress is another frequent cause of earth-leakage faults.
Possible sources include:
- Rain entering an outside light.
- Water inside an external socket.
- Damaged garden-lighting connections.
- A leaking pipe above a ceiling fitting.
- A roof leak affecting loft wiring.
- Condensation inside bathroom equipment.
- Damp affecting a socket or back box.
- Water entering a garage or shed installation.
- Damaged seals on outdoor equipment.
If the RCD trips mainly during or after wet weather, external lights, sockets, garden equipment and outbuilding supplies should be considered during the investigation.

Never touch a fitting or electrical accessory that has water entering it. Isolate the affected circuit if this can be done safely and arrange an urgent inspection.
- Damaged Electrical Wiring
Damage to a cable can allow current to escape to earth and cause the RCD to operate.
Wiring may be damaged by:
- Screws or nails driven into walls.
- Drilling during home improvements.
- Rodents in lofts, garages or voids.
- Cables becoming trapped behind appliances.
- Deteriorated insulation.
- Excessive heat.
- Building or decorating work.
- Garden tools cutting through an external cable.
- Poor-quality previous alterations.
- Movement at loose accessories or junction boxes.
Some cable faults cause an immediate trip. Others are intermittent and appear only when the cable moves, becomes damp or supplies a particular load.
If the RCD started tripping after shelves, flooring, kitchen units or other fixtures were installed, tell the electrician exactly what work was undertaken.
- A Neutral-to-Earth Fault
A connection or fault between neutral and earth can cause an RCD to trip, even when the affected circuit does not appear to be drawing much power.
Neutral-to-earth faults can occur within:
- Appliances.
- Damaged cables.
- Light fittings.
- Socket circuits.
- Junction boxes.
- Consumer units.
- Outdoor wiring.
- Incorrectly connected alterations.
These faults can be confusing because the RCD may trip only when another appliance or circuit is switched on.
Locating the problem normally requires the circuits to be safely isolated and insulation-resistance testing to be undertaken.
- Several Appliances Producing Combined Earth Leakage
Modern appliances often contain electronic filters and components that produce a small amount of normal protective-conductor current.
One appliance may not cause the RCD to operate. However, when several appliances are connected to circuits protected by the same RCD, their combined leakage can approach the device’s operating threshold.
Equipment that may contribute includes:
- Computers and monitors.
- LED lighting drivers.
- Induction hobs.
- Washing machines.
- Tumble dryers.
- Dishwasher controls.
- Television equipment.
- Chargers and power supplies.
- Heating controls.
- Surge-protected extension leads.
- Smart-home equipment.
This does not necessarily mean that every appliance is faulty. The installation may need to be assessed to determine whether there is a genuine defect, excessive cumulative leakage or an unsuitable circuit arrangement.
Individual RCBO protection can reduce disruption and make it easier to identify which circuit is responsible.
- A Faulty Immersion Heater or Heating Element
Heating elements are a particularly common source of RCD faults.
The insulation surrounding an element can deteriorate and allow current to leak to earth. The problem may become apparent only when the element heats up.
Potential examples include:
- Immersion heaters.
- Electric ovens.
- Grills.
- Washing machines.
- Dishwashers.
- Tumble dryers.
- Electric showers.
- Water heaters.
- Storage heaters.
If the RCD trips at approximately the same time each day, check whether an immersion heater, storage heater or timed heating system is switching on.
- An Outdoor Circuit Fault
Outside electrical equipment is regularly exposed to moisture, temperature changes and physical damage.
Possible causes include:
- Cracked outside lights.
- Damaged socket covers.
- Failed seals.
- Waterlogged junction boxes.
- Damaged pond equipment.
- Faulty hot-tub equipment.
- Garden cables damaged by tools.
- Deteriorated garage wiring.
- Defective electric gates.
- Christmas or decorative lighting.
An outdoor fault may explain why the RCD trips only during rain, overnight condensation or particularly cold weather.
External equipment should be suitable for its location and installed so that water cannot collect around connections.
- A Faulty RCD
RCDs can deteriorate or become defective, but the protective device should not automatically be blamed for repeated tripping.
In many cases, the RCD is operating correctly and responding to a fault elsewhere.
A qualified electrician can use appropriate test equipment to check:
- Whether the RCD operates.
- Its disconnection time.
- The residual current at which it trips.
- Whether it resets correctly.
- Whether the correct type of RCD has been installed.
- Whether a circuit or appliance is producing excessive leakage.
- Whether the device shows signs of heat damage or deterioration.

- The Wrong Type of RCD for Modern Equipment
Different RCD types are designed to respond to different forms of residual current.
Modern electrical equipment frequently contains electronic controls that can produce residual currents with pulsating DC components. The protective device must be suitable for the equipment and installation it protects.
Type A RCDs and RCBOs are commonly used for modern domestic circuits because they can respond to alternating residual current and pulsating DC residual current.

The RCD type should be assessed as part of the installation rather than changed solely because the device has tripped.
Why Does My RCD Trip at Night?
An RCD that trips overnight can be particularly difficult to trace because nobody may be actively using electrical equipment.
However, several appliances and systems can operate automatically, including:
- Refrigerators and freezers.
- Immersion heaters.
- Storage heaters.
- Boilers and heating controls.
- EV chargers.
- Security lights.
- Outdoor equipment.
- Washing machines or dishwashers on timers.
- Automatic pumps.
- Defrost cycles.
Dampness and overnight condensation can also affect outside electrical equipment.
Make a note of the approximate time of each trip and any equipment programmed to start around that time. This can provide an important clue during fault-finding.
Why Does the RCD Trip When It Rains?
Tripping during wet weather strongly suggests that moisture may be reaching electrical equipment, although proper testing is still required to confirm the cause.
Potential sources include:
- Outside sockets.
- Security lights.
- Garden lighting.
- Garage or shed supplies.
- Pond pumps.
- Electric gates.
- Hot tubs.
- Roof leaks affecting internal wiring.
- Damaged external junction boxes.
Do not repeatedly reset the RCD while the equipment remains wet. A damaged fitting may need to be isolated until it can be inspected and repaired.
Why Won’t My RCD Reset?
An RCD may refuse to reset because:
- A fault remains present.
- A connected appliance is defective.
- Water has entered electrical equipment.
- A fixed-wiring fault exists.
- A neutral-to-earth fault is present.
- The RCD needs to be moved fully to the off position before resetting.
- The RCD itself is defective.
If the RCD will not remain switched on, do not force it or repeatedly operate it.

What Can I Check Safely?
Without removing covers or touching electrical wiring, you can:
- Check which switch has operated.
Identify whether it is a shared RCD, an individual RCBO or an MCB.
- Note which circuits have lost power.
Circuit labels may help establish whether sockets, lights, heating or outside equipment are affected.
- Unplug portable appliances.
Unplug equipment supplied by the affected socket circuits, particularly anything recently used or showing signs of damage.
- Look for an obvious pattern.
Record whether the RCD trips when a specific appliance operates, during rain or at a particular time.
- Reset the device once.
Some RCDs need to be pushed fully into the off position before they can be returned to the on position.
- Stop if it trips again.
Repeatedly resetting a device without addressing the fault can be unsafe and may make diagnosis more difficult.
Do not:
- Remove the consumer-unit cover.
- Disconnect fixed electrical equipment.
- Open sockets, switches or junction boxes.
- Bypass the RCD.
- Hold the RCD in the on position.
- Replace the RCD without testing the circuits.
- Continue using an appliance suspected of causing the fault.
- Touch equipment affected by water.
Bypassing an RCD removes an important protective measure and is extremely dangerous.
Should I Unplug Everything to Find the Fault?
Unplugging portable appliances can help distinguish an appliance problem from a fixed-wiring fault.
However, remember that some equipment cannot be disconnected by removing a plug. This may include:
- Electric ovens and hobs.
- Immersion heaters.
- Electric showers.
- Outside lights.
- Heating systems.
- Alarm equipment.
- Extractor fans.
- Fixed pumps.
- EV charging equipment.
If the RCD continues to trip after portable appliances have been unplugged, the problem may involve fixed equipment, wiring or cumulative leakage across several circuits.
Professional testing will be required.
How Often Should an RCD Be Tested?
The test button checks that the device’s internal operating mechanism can disconnect the supply.
Follow the instructions displayed beside the consumer unit and any manufacturer guidance provided with the device. Current domestic documentation and consumer-unit notices commonly instruct users to operate the test button every six months.
Before testing:
- Save work on computers.
- Stop washing machines and other appliances.
- Make sure nobody is using an electric shower.
- Warn other occupants that power will be interrupted.
- Check whether essential equipment will be affected.
Pressing the test button should cause the RCD to disconnect immediately. If it does not operate, seek advice from a qualified electrician.
The button test does not replace professional instrument testing. It does not measure the device’s operating time or prove that every connected circuit is safe.
Does Repeated Tripping Mean I Need a New Consumer Unit?
Not necessarily.
The underlying fault may be resolved by:
- Repairing a damaged cable.
- Replacing a defective appliance.
- Replacing a water-damaged accessory.
- Repairing an outside circuit.
- Replacing a faulty heating element.
- Correcting a wiring defect.
- Replacing an unsuitable RCD.
However, an RCBO consumer unit may be worth considering when an older board uses one or two shared RCDs to protect many circuits.
Individual RCBO protection can:
- Limit a fault to the affected circuit.
- Reduce the amount of the property that loses power.
- Make fault identification easier.
- Avoid placing several circuits’ normal leakage onto one shared RCD.
- Provide protection better suited to a modern installation.
A consumer-unit upgrade should be recommended following an assessment of the existing equipment and installation, not simply because an RCD has operated.
Should Landlords Investigate a Tripping RCD?
Yes. Reports of repeated RCD tripping should be treated as an electrical fault rather than an inconvenience.
Ask the tenant to record:
- Which switch is tripping.
- Which rooms or circuits lose power.
- The date and time it occurs.
- Which appliances are operating.
- Whether it happens during wet weather.
- Whether there is burning, buzzing or overheating.
- Whether water ingress is present.
Do not instruct a tenant to keep resetting the RCD. The device may be disconnecting the supply because a dangerous fault is present.

When Is RCD Tripping an Emergency?
Arrange urgent assistance when tripping is accompanied by:
- A burning smell.
- Smoke or sparks.
- Buzzing or crackling.
- Scorch marks.
- A hot consumer unit, socket or switch.
- Water entering electrical equipment.
- Exposed wiring.
- A loss of power to essential equipment.
- Electric shocks or tingling from equipment.
- An RCD that will not reset.
- Repeated immediate tripping.
If there is fire, smoke or an immediate danger to occupants, leave the area and call 999.
How Does an Electrician Find the Fault?
Electrical fault-finding is normally a process of testing and elimination.
Depending on the symptoms, an electrician may:
- Confirm which RCD and circuits are affected.
- Disconnect appliances and fixed equipment where necessary.
- Divide the installation into smaller sections.
- Carry out insulation-resistance testing.
- Measure protective-conductor current.
- Test individual circuits.
- Check neutral and earth connections.
- Inspect external equipment for water ingress.
- Test the RCD’s operating time.
- Carry out a ramp test where useful for diagnosis.
- Check the type and rating of the protective device.
- Inspect the consumer unit for heat damage.
- Reproduce timed or weather-related faults where possible.
Intermittent faults can take longer to locate than permanent faults. Providing accurate information about when the RCD trips can significantly assist the investigation.
