Why Does My Bathroom Extractor Fan Keep Running?

A bathroom extractor fan that continues running after the light has been switched off is not necessarily faulty. Many modern fans are specifically designed to continue operating, respond automatically to humidity or run continuously at a low speed.

However, a fan that suddenly changes behaviour, never slows down or continues running much longer than usual may need adjustment, maintenance or electrical investigation.

This guide explains the most common reasons bathroom extractor fans keep running and when homeowners, landlords and property managers should arrange a professional inspection.

Your Fan May Have a Timer Overrun

Many bathroom fans are connected to the lighting circuit and incorporate a timer-overrun function.

When the bathroom light is switched off, the fan continues extracting moisture for a preset period. This helps remove steam that remains in the room after a bath or shower.

Depending on the fan, the timer may be adjustable and commonly continues operating for several minutes after the light is switched off. Vent-Axia advises that timer-overrun settings can typically be adjusted between approximately 3 and 30 minutes, although the available range varies by model.

If your fan switches itself off after a reasonable period, it is probably operating normally.

A timer fan usually requires:

If a fan is unexpectedly operating at full speed, the cause should still be investigated. The increased noise and electricity consumption may indicate an incorrect setting, restricted airflow or an electrical fault.

Should I Switch the Fan Off at the Isolator?

The fan isolator is generally provided to allow the fan to be safely isolated for maintenance, cleaning or replacement.

It should not normally be used as the everyday control for a continuous-running ventilation system.

Before switching the fan off for an extended period, establish whether it was designed to operate continuously. Disabling it may worsen condensation and mould, particularly in bathrooms without an opening window.
